As I mentioned above, I spent many years away from my head-fi rig, and over that time I must have lost some of my discerning ear. For casual listening at home, it's difficult to beat the comfort of the Sennheiser HD 599 for long sessions. Even though both headphones are built mainly of plastic, the ear pads have more give on the HD 599 with a lighter clamping force. In truth, the Sennheiser HD 559 seems poised to compete with the Audio Technica ATH-M50x, and to replace completely Sennheiser’s own older HD 558. The 10 ft (3 m) headphone cable is thick and durable, but the connection is a 1/4’’ stereo plug – and there is no adapter to be found in the box. They offer a fun sound, and I know that's a very subjective term that gets thrown around a lot here.

It's particularly important to choose headphones with a good acoustic seal for travelling, to avoid annoying your fellow passengers. While bass is enough and of good clarity, the 100-200Hz area being even boosted a little, you won't get that sub-bass rumble which is typical to many open-backs. Build-wise, this headphone is decent, featuring a lightweight if slightly-less reassuring composition of plastic, with comfortable velour padding on the headband and earpads.

And while one is on-ear and one is open-ear, they’ve left me wondering how their individual sound signatures compare to each other. The test I put headphones through for detail retrieval is Beck's "Unforgiven" because better headphones can make out the rasp and breaks in his voice.
