About this deal

For purely personal reasons, there was one aspect of the book that made me cry although its not a sad or downhearted read by any means but rather one that ultimately celebrates family and love. Imogen, Rachel, Sasha and Margo show us that we should not define or restrict our choices, but instead we should be unafraid to articulate what we want or need, and for that reason alone, The Garnett Girls is a timely and utterly enchanting debut novel that I absolutely loved.

I did lose interest and skim read this one, but I can’t work out why The Garnett Girls didn’t work for me. Now Deputy MD of Arts PR Agency Midas, Georgina Moore is an award-winning book publicist, who has worked in the publishing industry for twenty years, most recently at Headline.Sisters Rachel, Imogen and Sasha seem to have everything, but their father Richard’s abrupt departure, and the fallout of their parent’s marriage, has stunted their emotional growth. Her husband Phil is to be far too involved in her life and is controlling her world more and more, and Sasha is losing her sense of self at home, living for the times she can escape from her house and her marriage however briefly. New York Times bestselling author Fran Littlewood and Sunday Times bestselling author Georgina Moore chat about writing stories full of feeling. There are some interesting themes explored from love affairs, jealousy, secrets, disagreements, toxic relationships, abonnement, rivalries and alcoholism. Some of the books had even been written by Garnetts themselves – Bunny’s mother Constance translated most of the Russian classics into English, and Bunny himself was a successful novelist.

Fast forward years later we see The girls all grown and but each of them are almost crippled by the many questions never answered with Margo remaining tight lipped is not helping any of them. Rachel is married to Gabriel, she’s a lawyer and definitely the solution finder and a decision maker in this family unit. I have fond memories of the Isle of Wight from my time living in the UK, so this aspect of the story was quite nostalgic for me.A family saga that breaks apart the intricacies of sisterly relationships, The Garnett Girls is a drama filled family chronicle. It was such a potent love story that after Richard walked away from Margo she has never been the same again. The location of the Isle of Wight was a lovely reminder of my childhood too and certain scenes and places conjured my own family knowledge.

A searingly honest novel that investigates how sisterly and motherly love can breed resentment, jealousy, and contempt.Meanwhile, Rachel, lawyer, wife of the wonderful Gabe and mother to Hannah and Lizzie, isn’t thrilled to have inherited the care of the rundown Isle of Wight family pile, Sandcove, admittedly a great place to raise children but in desperate need of repair and the default venue for the parties Margo loves to throw.

Go back to what your mother taught you': TV presenter Susannah Constantine on the six money-saving hacks that helped her cut energy use on laundry by a THIRD! The ease with which Georgina wrote about these women and their sexuality felt frank and direct, and for me, made me feel closer to the characters. There were some events that I would have liked to have had more page time with – Sasha and Imogen’s breakups, Rachel’s suspicions about her husband and a client and when one of the girls goes missing as a child. Imogen, a successful playwright, feels under pressure to settle down in her thirties and please her mother.Even our surnames were almost identical as my maiden name was Garrett, only one letter different from Garnett. This debut novel explores family relationships, both the good and the bad, and deals with some difficult subjects with sensitivity. I kept having to read the back of the book to check where the story was heading and what the purpose of it was. The secrets spill out, some quietly and others in huge confrontations as the Garnett girls discover what they do and don’t want.
