There he defeats the Hero Hynreck with his magical sword, meets Atreyu, and shares his storytelling ability with the townspeople. By the time the group finally arrives at the Ivory Tower, Bastian decides that Xayide is his only friend and that he wants to rule Fantastica. As she approaches his mountain, the Old Man tries to dissuade her from entering to the point of insulting her. Plot wise the elements that made the film unique are all very much present, albeit the film takes up quite literally the first half of the novel. Realizing that he no longer wants to be alone, Bastian leaves the lion and journeys to Amarganth, where he is celebrated as the savior of Fantastica.

The film was lambasted by film critics for its poor and laughable dialogue and special effects and was a box-office bomb. Mostly during the Nothings destruction of Fantasia, he helps Atreyu along the way of his quest to stop The Nothing. The first protagonist is a young warrior, who is asked by the sick Empress to set off and find the cure for their world. Atreyu tries to protect Bastian by taking the amulet, but instead the human boy banishes both Atreyu and Falkor. Some are so bent on winning a game of chance that they lose everything they own, and some sacrafice everything for a dream that can never come true.

It almost feels that Ende had two separate visions for novels, one about fantasy and one about wish fulfilment and purpose. As with the novel, the Oracle crumbles and dies after revealing the cure for the Childlike Empress' condition.

Gifted with the Empress’s magical protection amulet, AURYN, Atreyu sets out with his talking horse, Artax, to discover a cure for the Empress and save Fantastica.It covers only the first half of the book, ending at the point where Bastian enters Fantastica (renamed "Fantasia" in the film), and features characters who look markedly different from how they are described in the book (most notably Bastian, who is very self-conscious about his weight in the book, but is depicted as slender in the film). In the novel, he appears as an elderly black centaur with his lower half with the striped pattern of a zebra.

He lives alone in an egg-shaped home on top of the Wandering Mountain, which can be found only by chance or fate.
