About this deal

Not to disrespect anyone’s overblown bubble of pretense – even as burst with all the outrush of hot air.

Ancient man was perplexed by mushrooms because they seemingly produced fruit without being fertilized. Conjuring Eden: Art and the Entheogenic Vision of Paradise Archived 2019-02-08 at the Wayback Machine, Entheos: Vol.In other words, the use of psychotropic plants could certainly result in strong beliefs about other worlds or dimensions, even of other sentiences, and fertility is certainly of major concern to all agricultural communities.

I later found out that this book was the downfall of Allegro and ruined his professional reputation. The answer is found in a bit from the interview with Malice, where Rogan, an outspoken skeptic of organized religion and a hallucinogen aficionado, argues that, at their best, most religions are nothing more than ethical systems intended to inspire us to be better people — something, he notes, you can also achieve by tripping on mushrooms. Having just recently been exposed to this mushroom “theory”, I don’t doubt at all that drugs have played a part any religion, including Judaism and Christianity. In this book, the author goes back to the roots of civilization in Sumeria to trace the use of psychedelic mushrooms as tools for divine revelation, and breaks down the original language of the Bible to show, among other things, the story of Jesus to be a thinly-veiled, word-play filled chronicle of merits of the sacred mushroom. This caused the publisher to apologize for issuing it and forced Allegro's resignation from his university position. This is surely no surprise, because then as now, the psychedelic experience is one of THE most powerful experiences we are ever going to have, and thus this has inevitably inspired creative imagination for millennia. In fact why don’t you stop reading here for the sake of your easily shattered composure while I shed a little light on your carefully darkened landscape – avert your gaze from here on for the sake of your eyes, accustomed as they are to the darkness, unable to bear light. We’re ready to break the code of the main hypothesis of this book - that the mystery cult of the sacred mushroom in ancient Israel codified their sacred knowledge and rituals into religious text before they were persecuted by the Romans. The bulk of his work on the Dead Sea Scrolls was done by 1960 and he was at odds with his scrolls colleagues.

This is actually THE identifying characteristic of the Amanita Muscaria mushroom when compared to other Amanitas. PS: I read it through a poorly compiled eBook that I found for free, so I could not properly get the references in the book. Their knowledge was well guarded and carefully used in rituals, such as the zodiac as described in the dead sea scrolls. But damn is that deeper meaning hard to find when one can barely get trough a chapter without dying of boredom. Although I'd picked up some Greek, I'd not even begun to study Hebrew, not to mention the other, older languages. It also highlights how easy it is to draw wildly different ideas from the inchoate mess that is the bible. As with any art interpretation, it can be extremely difficult to take symbology out of its cultural context and this is perhaps the most challenging point of this project. Allegro’s claim that the name of Jesus was rooted in an ancient Sumerian name for a mushroom that means “semen, which saves” is a great example of the self-promoting, weirdo academic playbook. John Marco Allegro was a scholar who challenged orthodox views of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Bible and the history of religion, with books that attracted popular attention and scholarly derision.
