About this deal

Charlie’s ex-wife Mary (Samantha Morton) appears late in the film and confronts Charlie for his apparently sudden interest in repairing a badly-damaged relationship with Ellie.

With a claustrophobic setting, some amazing camerawork, and the best performance of the year from the legendary (and now Oscar-winner) Brendan Fraser, The Whale is one of the sweetest and most emotional movies of the year. Ambient noises in the surround speakers bring to life the rain, thunder, and Charlie's movements around the house. With The Whale, Fraser plays a man named Charlie, a lonely English professor for an online university who weighs in at almost 600 pounds. With a claustrophobic setting, some amazing camerawork, and the best performance of the year from the legendary Brendan Fraser, The Whale is one of the sweetest and most emotional movies of the year. Three Colors Trilogy will be a 7-disc set, featuring each film in a new 4K restoration with Dolby Vision HDR on UHD and also remastered Blu-ray.The other Blu-rays in the set will include 3 Cinema Lessons with Krzysztof Kieślowski, interviews with Juliette Binoche, Julie Delpy, Irène Jacob, editor Jacques Witta, and producer Marin Karmitz, “Making of” and Cannes featurettes, and the theatrical trailers. If you have the setup and a big enough TV screen and good vision it’s pretty simple why cinephiles want films in their best possible presentation. Barely able to move and ashamed for other people to see his immense body, he isolates himself to his perpetually darkened apartment.

Meanwhile, Thomas (Ty Simpkins; Jurassic World), a young, Christian, missionary, discovers Charlie and decides it is his quest to help Charlie find the word of God.You can easily find articles about this and understand why Aronofsky shot the film with that aspect ratio. Rob Simonsen’s score creates the appropriate atmosphere without being too intrusive, subtly matching Charlie’s changing moods and creating a sense of nostalgic loss. The Whale was captured digitally by director of photography Matthew Libatique in X-OCN ST (6K) quality using Sony CineAlta Venice cameras and Angenieux Optima Primo lenses, and finished as a 4K Digital Intermediate at the aspect ratio of 1. Yeah, it’s not as big a jump as from DVD to Blu, but you sound like someone who was defending DVD’s 13 years ago. In fact, he hasn’t had a role like this since 1998’s “Gods and Monsters,” with director Darren Aronofsky putting his faith in Fraser to help realize the abyssal levels of pain contained within Samuel D.
