Thunder and lightning brew on the horizon, a storm rolling into Scotland that foreshadows the beginning of the end. Also, some stories are divided into mini-sections, some of which I found unrelated but still very very good; like shorter flash fiction. He flashed her a wan smile, reaching over to stroke her tousled hair in the same repeated motions as before. I feel like all I’ve heard of Kirsty Logan is how atmospheric her writing is, and with her name cropping up in relation to so many horror books, I really went into this expecting to be wowed. His body, like a massive shadow over her, would press densely against hers, slowly sinking until they melted into each other.

Die Themen sind so eng miteinander verbunden, dass es sich mehr wie ein großes atmendes Gewebe anfühlt, in dem alles ineinandergreift. With the force of his kiss, he bridged the distance between, rolling in their entangled embrace until he was on top of her. The characters and voices found in these tales seem to perfectly suit the unsettling times in which we live. This is far from a “bad collection”, but for me, based on my likes, dislikes and experiences, it was just a bad experience. Her stories are rich and bitty, like the seeds of the pomegranate that illustrate its cover (what is it that makes the pomegranate so terrifying, aside from its connections to the underworld? Especially "Things My Wife and I Found Hidden in Our House", which I want to pin up forever on my studio wall and look at in the reminder that this story is what I want to be when I (and my thesis) grow up, and "We Can Make Something Grow Between the Mushrooms and the Snow" (I would happily live in the Island House right now), and "Sleep Long, Sleep Tight, it is Best to Wake Up Late".

He always kissed her through it, unwilling to watch her wince, moan, and arch her back through the delightful friction as he pushed past her walls. He was no longer like one of them, simple human beings and tools to be used for the sake of their kingdom. Never quite able to live in the present, Xander was caught in the limbo of a troubled past and an uncertain future.Streng genommen handelt es sich um einen Kurzgeschichtenband und obwohl viele der Erzählungen auch für sich allein funktionieren, sind andere eher Vignetten, die in ihrer Gesamtkomposition ihre volle Wirkung entfalten. I have to say in advance: it’s mostly me, not the collection, but maybe be advised on the content before you go into it. But despite the horrors of Voldemort’s new world, help—and hope—seem to arise from the most unlikely of places. He grows up, “and he goes and gets a job and a wife and a house”, but his mother still “knows” her son is really dead. Xander let out a long, drawn-out exhalation as he rolled, shifting beneath Corrin so they faced each other. Corrin, meanwhile, trailed her fingers along the shelf of his collar bone, feeling for the firm grooves of his naked skin.

Pop telling her higher, lift higher, and she strained her arms as much as she could because they were heavy, much heavier than she thought they could be, and finally Pop got them tied to the crossbar and Jay could go inside. With each day they spent on the road, the need to be with him blossomed, taking root in the depths of her heart so that with every breath and every sigh, she yearned for him.

The book starts with a short introduction from the “author” herself, where she is set in Iceland, in a remote village without any distractions. Everything is spinning and she hears the dead seeds clacking and the sunflowers creaking and the empty crucifixes leaning down towards her and she digs, she digs, and all the way down it’s teeth and hair and bones and teeth and hair and bones and teeth and hair and. Dabei entsteht der wahre Horror oft erst durch das stille Weiterdenken über das Ende der jeweiligen Erzählung hinaus oder durch die Reflektion auf die Realität. I don't think it will appeal to everyone (it is quite strange in places), but then again it is not meant to. I hoped for more interaction between them but it was a lot of just describing what they were doing instead of just writing while it was hapening. But the more she pondered this otherworldly scenario, the more she realized that she had no clue, at all, what it meant to be a queen. There was something of a tremor in her voice as she peered up, probing the dark for the faint light of his eyes.
