Plus, society seems to be very sensitive and on the lookout for any perceived slights, so that things can be misinterpreted easily. Salma, Bil and their son Zain moved to a quieter suburban neighborhood looking for a fresh start, but they don’t start off on a good foot with their neighbors when an anti-racist banner is taken down, and it’s assumed it is an act of racism. In this, she explores just how pervasive racism and classism is, even unconscious bias, as well as the role social media plays in amping up our grievances. Plenty of drama in the back-and-forth battle between the two families sometimes felt cringy instead of building the suspense about what they would do next. Thus people often cohabit as virtual strangers showing the least interest in knowing their neighbours. However, in most cases our fears do not have any founding are they are merely a figment of our imagination.A fabulous plot, a well written book with poignant messaging, and characters you might not like but you might have seen them! Salma and Bil are stunned by the dramatic action, but Salma tries to adjust accordingly and moves the flag inside to display through the window instead.

Salma Khatun, her husband Bil, and teenage son Zain move to a nice neighborhood of Blenheim for a fresh start. This makes full use of snobbery, both of the upper classes towards the working folks, and that of the lower class Charles Victor, full of Bolshie contempt for the uppers, and yet always ready to cadge whatever he fancies, from a beer to Warner's reading glasses. In Second World War era Britain, working-class Sam Twigg (Jack Warner) and his wife Mary (Marjorie Rhodes) are raising their family in the shadow of the Blitz. In fact, it makes them all unlikeable to some extent because they also lacked maturity, common sense and humility to admit when they got it wrong.

Also, the family’s dog, Molly, is used as a means to create tension and APPREHENSION-which never sits well with me. Salma chooses to let this go, instead placing it on their window, only to discover the window painted over. The court part of the book takes up a little less space than in her previous books, but these parts are perfectly written, making you feel angry, agitated, confused, and eager to keep reading to find out how the big mystery will unfold. They even submit the app for a diversity startup fund, and as nice as it is to read about them working on it together, it’s also sad to see how their families’ tensions are putting a strain on their friendship. When racial commentary TRULY enters the picture and is caught on video, things spiral even further out of control.

Those People Next Door - Rotten Tomatoes Those People Next Door - Rotten Tomatoes

So many aspects of this book has been carefully considered, everything down to the title and use of the word ‘those’ to mean ‘different’ or even ‘antisocial’, but certainly not ‘us’. There are misleading statements and rumor in the air giving inappropriate portrayal of our neighbour’s activities. The working-class Twigg family reside somewhere in the North, with Londoner father Jack Warner, Northerner mother Marjorie Rhodes, two daughters with posh Southern accents and son Anthony Newley with his London accent. As you know I LOVE new neighbours stories and new streets but this was kinda different, the rawness of the dispute and the real anger and nerves touched where based on colour, the author very cleverly and succinctly gave both sides of the story, one of those where you read a chapter and you are ‘right, that’s my side decided’…. Shortly after they move in, Salma spots her neighbour, Tom Hutton, ripping out the anti-racist banner in their front garden.A terrific storyline that had me thinking maybe this person has a point, and the next I’d think no, the other person or family are right but ultimately neither family are completely blameless. The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they aren't true, but they are incomplete.
