Women in the novel are expected to be modest, obedient, and demure in their actions and speech, and they are judged harshly if they deviate from these expectations. A hundred pages or so in though I started to see what a shrewd eye for character this Austen woman had. A true publishing treasure, the splendid cover illustrations with gold embossing, inspired by exuberant naturalistic motifs of the period, spill across the front and back covers and spine, transforming each book into a unique and beautiful object.
