North Coast 500 - The ultimate road trip around the North of

From the lochs to the peaks, these campsites in Scotland offer the opportunity for some epic Scottish adventures. Loch Eilt, along the same road as the viaduct and Loch Shiel, is where the little island of Eilean na Mòine lies, which played the starring role as the site of Dumbledore’s Grave. If you’ve only got a few days in Scotland, don’t cram too much in- you’ll get overwhelmed and exhausted. However, there are several incredibly scenic roads in Scotland which we highly recommend you explore- some of them are perfect for just a few days, while some require a little more time to drive.I’ve driven the NC500 in my motorhome and it was fantastic- highly highly recommend it (although NOT in the school holidays as it gets very crowded. Don’t feel obliged to solely follow the route, hop into the ones you like… oh and take note of Shetland (you’ll need a ferry to get across to here). Its soft, white, sandy beach is most definitely a great reason to visit, rent a small stone cottage and spend a few days living in this peaceful region of Scotland. Ideal for tourists with hundreds of distinctive tourist symbols and tourist information centres all shown. Balmoral Castle is open to us public between April and July every year, so plan your visit around this.

Spend an afternoon discovering more about its history and make sure to spot the William Wallace Tower, too. There are a number of very well managed wildlife centres and parks around the country such as the fantastic Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick or the Highland Wildlife Park near Kingussie. Kelvingrove Museum will keep families entertained for hours while children will be fascinated by the activities in the Glasgow Science Centre. Scotland is part of the UK, so they speak English *I really want to insert a bad Scottish joke here… but I’ll be good! It’s ok for young kids, but it’s pretty expensive, so if you’re on a budget you might want to keep driving and stop at one of the many laybys alongside the loch. Visitors to the Scottish Highlands can lose themselves in one of the world’s most beautiful landscapes where dramatic mountain ranges and vast glassy lochs are waiting to be discovered around every corner.

My suggestion is to plan your itinerary on Google Maps, and then be as flexible as possible to work around the weather. I also recommend a visit to George Street (grab a cocktail from the Dome) and enjoy the atmosphere, especially around Christamas. With the all the fantastic landscapes and beautiful sandy beaches on offer, families have loads of options from swimming, cycling, and walking to sightseeing and just relaxing with a picnic. Having a motorhome or campervan will further increase your flexibility and allow you to choose the scenic route based on weather or interest, not on hotels you’ve booked.Scotland has a massive variety of landscapes, including two national parks: the Cairngorms National Park, a truly beautiful range of mountains and surrounding hills in the east highlands, and Loch Lomand and the Trossachs National Park which contains wild mountains and deep mysterious lochs.

The Best Attractions in Scotland: Tourist Map 2023

We did debate going all around the western edge and completing the NC500 (there are some beautiful campsites on the North Coast 500), but we only had 10 days for touring Scotland, so we decided to cut across to save time, plus see Loch Ness and to escape the rain! I remember standing outside our log cabin and gazing up at the stars in absolute amazement- they were so bright and clear.

Scotland’s capital has quite an incredible history and one that it’s eager to share with us, visitors. The best area to stay in depends on how long you intend to spend in Scotland and where you will be travelling to. Make sure to drive to Queens View and grab a bite to eat in the Fern Cottage Restaurant that sits quaintly in a stone cottage on Ferry Road.
