About this deal

The 7th Infantry Regiment, reinforced by two Marine Infantry platoons, held Mount Longdon, Wireless Ridge (to the northwest of the Capital), Port Stanley, and Cortley Ridge (to the east). On the night of 4–5 June, a British three-man patrol from D Company (consisting of Corporal Jerry Phillips and Privates Richard Absolon and Bill Hayward) was sent out to the northern slopes of Mount Longdon, [37] detailed to penetrate Sub-Lieutenant Juan Baldini's 1st Platoon on the western slopes and secure a prisoner. Such evenings would usually end with heart-felt renditions of 'Lorelei' ('Tomorrow Belongs to Me'), 'The Fallschirmjager Song', and 'When We March on England'. Lieut-Col Parker confirmed to me both his conversation with Bramley and the existence of the Mason / Parker letter. First Lieutenant Raúl Fernando Castañeda gathered the sections of his platoon, hooked around First Sergeant Raúl González's 2nd Platoon that was already fighting and delivered a counterattack [at about 2am local time].

Former officer backs Falklands atrocity claim: Parachute

Bramley was in Support Company, and thus more of an observer than a participant in extreme Green-Eyed practices. He was an Army commando who had fought against the People's Revolutionary Army in Tucuman province during the 'Dirty War'. The previous day, Private Carbone had also been evacuated after he shot himself in his left thigh while inside his tent, as revealed in the book Two Sides of Hell ( Bloomsbury Publishing, 1994). After the Falklands War he transferred from the Parachute Regiment to the Royal Army Ordnance Corps; and while serving with that regiment was convicted of possession of pyrotechnics and sentenced to three years' imprisonment (in the course of which he wrote Excursion to Hell). In the wake of press stories, MPs demanded an inquiry, and in August 1992 Malcolm Rifkind, the Secretary of State for Defence, asked Scotland Yard to investigate the claims made in Bramley's book. As dusk set-in, 3 PARA moved to their start lines and began to make the four-hour-long advance on their objectives. Also killed in the initial fighting was Cavalry Sergeant Jorge Alberto Ron (according to Private Altieri who was wounded in the blast that killed the NCO [48]) and the Argentine forward artillery observation officer, Lieutenant Alberto Rolando Ramos, whose last message was that his position was surrounded. The battle for Longdon, just one part of the 'push for Port Stanley' and followed immediately by the capitulation of the Argentines, was denied the close press attention applied to the earlier, daylight engagement.

The location was checked on the evening of 8 June by another patrol, but there was no sign of the packs or radio, which meant the battalion's radio net could have been compromised. Therefore, Argentine Commando units, normally used for deep reconnaissance, were used to take on this role, and they were able to do so with some success. The case concerns the reported actions of members of the Parachute Regiment’s crack Third Battalion, which on June 11 and 12, 1982, fought a bloody battle for Mt. La sección de Castañeda fue la última en dejar el monte; aunque el día 12 siguieron bajando soldados argentinos aislados, que se habían escondido.

Within 36 hours, the Argentine forces had surrendered and Thompson's boss, Major General Jeremy Moore, could triumphantly cable London: 'The Falkland Islands are once more under the government desired by their inhabitants. In what he later described as 'a straight-forward no- nonsense Warminster-style attack' Brigadier Julian Thompson, the commander of 3 Commando Brigade, had thrown his force of 5,500 men into a massive rolling assault to capture the key mountain peaks overlooking the Falklands capital - Two Sisters, Mount Harriet, Mount Longdon and Tumbledown.
