Having a lot of good songs with novel arrangements, and being uniquely a sort of jam band with no soloists, made them wonderful to listen to.

Gomez’s drummer Olly Peacock commented; “ Liquid Skin was the step from the four track and recording in a garage to us accepting – in the most ridiculous way – that we were now doing music professionally. Sensing success, the band released its sophomore set Liquid Skin less than a year and a half after their initial outing. Meanwhile, the moody 'Do's And Don'ts' would end up as a track on the following year's 'Maschismo' EP. As well as an energised rendition of 'Hangover', a loose and melodic 'Rhythm And Blues Alibi', an atmospheric 'Rosemary', and a crazy performance of 'Las Vegas Dealer', they turn the epic 'Devil Will Ride' into a bona fide singalong.

While the arrangements can be intricate, songs such as the folky 'Revolutionary Kind' use simple repeated guitar hooks as their base, leaving the band to playfully add the colours and texture that defines their sound. I had the opportunity to do a few more Gomez stories over the next few years and I was always conscientious about requesting Tom Gray. Bring It On’s surprising, prize-receiving success (to a certain extent) was the product of savvy counterprogramming. There will be an accompanying remastered double LP release on black 180g vinyl and a limited D2C transparent edition too. Those gigs were some of the best that we have ever done and we’ve done probably, upwards of a thousand now together.

Nostalgia has brought the excitement of old back around for both fans and the band, starting with the lavish reissue of debut Bring It On in 2018 and a subsequent tour. While previously released demos from the 20 year anniversary edition, “Nobody’s Girl” and “Throwin’ Myself Away” would have fit perfectly on Liquid Skin, given a little spit and polish, “Someday” is something else entirely. We also do not accept products that are intimate or sanitary goods, hazardous materials, or flammable liquids or gases. Although their influences were wildly different, the best American indie bands of the time period, say Braid, or At the Drive-In, or Modest Mouse, or The Dismemberment Plan (and also Red Red Meat, whose drummer/producer Brian Deck later worked with Gomez on A New Tide, indicating that they were clearly paying attention to these bands even if they didn’t sound much like them) were groping in this direction. Described as a blues rock album, Liquid Skin was compared to the work of Beck, the Grateful Dead, and Pearl Jam.It’s typical whenever an inactive band gets back out on the road to celebrate an anniversary that you speculate about whether the reunion will lead to new music. Acoustic guitars lead the majority of the songs, which are accompanied by horns, strings, and keyboards. bring it on" is a class song though and a deserved hit, the trippy "revolutionary kind" makes one wonder if this is really what beck might have sounded like if he had joined a band from southport. There were certain gigs, like Barrowland [Ballroom] in Scotland where we really didn’t have to play, the crowd would just take it on for you. What’s funny about Gomez touring behind Liquid Skin (in the UK and in Australia, anyway, where they’ve maintained more of a following) is that they can’t possibly make another record that sounds like it. To be honest at the time, we were making in-roads in the States and Australia and then we won the best live act award in NME. I'm not worried about your state of mind, 'cause you're not the revolutionary kind," croons Ben Ottewell, Gomez's gravel-voiced singer on "Revolutionary Kind", but indeed, it's precisely this attitude that mobilises Gomez's harshest critics.Get Miles” is the Gomez pitch in a nutshell; it’s a swamp blues with a penetrating analog synth hook sung out of the park by Ben Ottewell, who does a frighteningly good approximation of Howlin’ Wolf for a nebbish with glasses who’s a dead ringer for the actor David (Michael Bolton) Herman.
