About this deal

However, I did notice that overexposed images have a slight yellow color cast on them, especially the skin tones. I have never shot film, and unfortunately given the current economic climate I am unlikely to be able to start, but I am absolutely loving this series of adventures!

An exception to this rule may be skin tones, which appear natural in most conditions (whereas building materials, the sky, and certain natural textures will suffer). I like Superia a good amount but the green cast that comes with everything Fuji kind of puts me off of it, if I am honest. This overall color accuracy makes the film perfect for travel, or for shooting landscapes or cityscapes. Though not as fine-grained as those professional-level films, it’s certainly got enough resolving power to make sharp and smooth images. It’s true that these shifts can be easily corrected in post-processing (if we’re scanning our negatives), but with a 400 speed film there’s really little reason to push. There are two different options for Kodak Ultramax - you can choose between a 36 exposure roll or a 24 exposure roll.

I use Ultramax for all personal projects but it has just a little too much grain for professional use.

Blues and yellows and greens are perfectly balanced, while reds are nicely restrained, which is a blessing since many consumer-grade films seem to oversaturate in the reds. Consenting to these technologies will allow us to process data such as browsing behavior or unique IDs on this site.

Plus If I’m going to get really into a film I don’t want it to be discontinued with little notice (again, looking at you Fujifilm). Overall I feel it’s a lackluster option compared to Kodak Gold which I believe is the more comparable alternative in terms of pricing and use.

This means that it can cope with all of the most common lighting situations, and is known as a mid-speed film. It comes with a higher saturation than professional films with an aim at more attractive photographs for the consumer. Colour-balanced for smooth skin tones and natural hues, it delivers bright blues, greens and reds out of the box - perfect for all kinds of photography; from portraits to action scenes. You're not going to get the vivid greens of Ektar or the beautiful warmth of Portra, but this makes for a wonderful 'all-round' 35mm film that might be aimed at a huge variety of subjects across 24 or 36 exposures. Meaning I do not want making photographs to be the focus, I just want to document an occasion and enjoy the moment.

A 'premium snapshot' film - I would take this on holiday for evening and party shots, knowing that it's high speed gives me more wiggle room on lighting and shutter speed than slower colour films. During the past year I’ve used it at night and by a blisteringly sunlit pool; on a foggy sail across Vineyard Sound and at a kid’s indoor birthday party. Kodak UltraMax 400 is indeed the ultimate consumer-grade film that delivers a hassle-free photo-taking experience. Once you get the hang of using Kodak UltraMax 400, you can rest assured that you won’t need to look too hard to get more supplies. The colors from Kodak UltraMax 400 come out well saturated and are a bit on the warmer side; a typical Kodak look. But most likely, you’ll see another film Fujifilm now sells in new packaging that some photographers suspect to be rolls of rebranded Kodak UltraMax. Yes the remjet layer can be difficult, but the home development kits for this are now really good and I love the cinematic look that these films can give. Where Kodak Ektar famously ruins lighter skin-tones with garish oranges and reds, Kodak Ultramax 400 renders beautifully when exposed properly.
