This record has so often been written about and reviewed that all I want to do here is get to the sound of this recent reissue mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog tape, and compare it to previous issues. As to the album’s sound, it was breathtaking, coming across as if Brian Wilson was no longer walking among us, and for the most part, locked in his room, he wasn’t.

This is especially true considering that many Beach Boys albums have sounded terrible over the years, including many of the original Capitol releases (and the nightmare duophonic stereo fold-downs). The album was disappointing to me when it came out and it still is today … it was disappointing to most people, it didn’t chart well at all. In the UK, the album was lauded by critics and reached number 2 on the Top 40 Albums Chart, remaining in the top ten for six months. No one was already for this album, an album that was both soulful and lovely, yet sitting on an undercurrent of despair, which of course gave listeners back in 1966 something profound to consider.

It has the Capitol "Full Dimensional Stereo" Logo, and an "ST" catalogue number, just like a stereo edition would have had. Sorry to hear you missed tickets for Wilson's show, maybe you can get some for his next show of the tour? but again kind of embarrassing to admit but I don't really know the Beach Boys at all, outside of a few of their AM hits I know and don't care about too much.
