Jürgen Klopp has almost single-handedly injected the passion back into English football with his charisma and high-tempo brand of the beautiful game. I think we're all a bit in love with Juergen Klopp, and this extended love letter to the man who has brought honesty, fun, realism, and context back to English football is a great read. He is an enigmatic character and has developed a type of play that seems to have worked at the club's he has managed. In between times, Quinn plays tribute to other great Liverpool managers like Bob Paisley and Kenny Dalglish and superb players such as Dalglish (again), Kevin Keegan and Steven Gerrard. It is not a biography of Klopp, though reference is frequently made to key moments in the great German manager's life and career.

In my opinion, the book is much the better for this as it flip flops between outlining how the author fell in love with Liverpool FC as a young boy (following an initial flirtation with Celtic), detailing Klopp's early life, footballing career and forays into management with Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, before providing comparisons between Klopp and the man who previously galvanised Liverpool FC, Bill Shankly. This was a good read as I got to learn about Klopp's history, his time at Mainz as a player and coach. I couldn't follow these parts of the book, but what I really liked about the book is the author gave enough emphasis on how Klopp started, grew and learnt about the art of football and also about Klopp's superb character which nails him to be a great football manager.

There’s very little about his personal life or the forces that make him such a charismatic figure, but lots of detail about tactics and strategy, piled high with statistical data. Little Jürgen grew up in a village in Germany’s Black Forest and spent most of his time watching or playing football. Jurgen Klopp has almost single-handedly injected the passion back into English football with his charisma and high-tempo brand of the beautiful game. my biggest gripe with the book is that the final 1/3 is no more than a summary of liverpool seasons under klopp, considering the target audiance for this book is liverpoll/football fans the ending seemed unneccessary. He has taken Liverpool back to the top of European football by winning the 2019 UEFA Champions League Final and his team won the Premier League in 2020.

Perhaps only then will we be able to gain the full measure of Klopp the man, rather than just the enigma.Klopp is not just the reformer of Liverpool FC, but a true leader and authentic father figure who has created the most beautiful working environment in modern football, based on his faith in the principles of teamwork and a love for his fellow human being. Written with great knowledge by Neveling, this is a very interesting look at the tactics, workings and philosophy of his teams over the years - from Mainz to Dortmund to Liverpool. I would recommend this book to any football fan because it doesn't just relate to Klopp himself it also gives an interesting look at football coaching in general and how they operate and think. By his own admission, too, Klopp wasn’t particularly noteworthy in his playing days, making up with dogged perseverance what he lacked in ability.
