About this deal

I was also disappointed with the manner in which Counter treated the characters that have become beloved over two books. I modelled him no other weapons other than his force staff to try give the feel his powers are what he has come to rely upon. Sure, Counter manages to create a high level of tension anyway in this book, but I just think that if we didn’t know what was going to happen at the end, then the result would have been more unpredictable. Galaxy in Flames concerns the virus-bombing of Istvaan III and the Warmaster Horus' ultimate fall into madness, which resulted in a galactic civil war where brother would fight brother.

He could not say what it was this feeling he had, and it angered him as this feeling flew in the face of all the honour and pride he had felt since his induction into his beloved legion, but it filled him with a sense of foreboding that drove him act.Euraphti Keeler, the living saint, Kyril Sinnderman and Mersadie Oilton pay witness to Astrates war first hand. Saul Tarvitz’s straight man act may shade into vanilla, but he is doing stuff in just enough of a way to not seem like a creature of the plot. I think the biggest issue with Counter's writing is also, bizarrely, one of his strengths - this is the fact that he flits from POV to POV without remaining more than a few pages with one character. There is such an intriguing fear of religion, the supernatural, and sorcery in the first two books, and the switch to embrace it by the betrayers is surprising (but no less dramatic).

This book has everything I have come to love from the Horus Heresy series -- awesome battle scenes, plot twists and turns, action and treachery! However over the course of the three books things start to change, and I was quite impressed that other points of view on the topic appeared. Once again though, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing as the action is great and well deserved considering where we are in the story.Saul also stands out from the rest of his brothers as he comes off as a black sheep in comparison to the rest. The above is not implausible within the universe in isolation, but it is part of a repeated Manichaean theme. If you are curious about the sprawling The Horus Heresy® series but aren't ready to commit to reading 50+ books of OTT splatterpunk and corny jarhead machismo, this is a good place to stop.

Warmaster Horus has fallen to Chaos, but his plans of rebellion against the Emperor are known only to a few he trusts to side with him. Having made a miraculous recovery from the grevious injuries he suffered on Davin, Warmaster Horus now leads the triumphant Imperial forces against the rebel world of Isstvan III. I’ve yet to read a novel from him that couldn’t be described as bolter-porn, and Galaxy in Flames is no exception. The battle of Istvan III is a long one, longer than all the ones in the previous 2 books packed together, an epic and bloody tale of death and betrayal like an ancient greek tragedy. He was a very two-dimensional character initially, and seemed to exist purely to represent two ideas: The notion that even astartes could be "old", and that even astartes could be sycophants. It's an annoying way of doing it and I kind of feel this might be where the Witcher TV series got its idea for the amount of stupid time jumps. A general doubting both the loyalty of his army and his own loyalty to his superior, to his brothers and to his principles. With Galaxy in Flames, they get dedicated page time and with their struggles and battles, and it means that we understand their motivations far clearer. Ben Counter brings us this exciting third part of the opening trilogy to The Horus Heresy, setting the stage for these epic tales. After not having read this for a fair few years, and reading quite a few other amazing novels in the meantime, this is still a thoroughly enjoyable novel.

An assault force containing elements of all four legions chosen by Horus and including Garviel Loken, Tarik Torgaddon and Lucius descends on Isstvan III's capital city and battle breaks out.But I never struggled through it, and I am inclined to give it credit for not devolving into navel gazing. That seems to be to be more an issue with the overall direction of the series, and the task he was set to fulfil. When pitched against the right targets, these guys perform just as exemplary as every bit of their lore describes them as. Loken was built up by Abnett and then McNeill to be a conflicted soul - tortured at the idea that his brothers are being taken over by the power of the warp; starting to hear 'the music of the spheres'; but here his character development was limited. This novel does its job best focusing on the ground forces of space marines fighting treachery, and that’s what a lot of us are showing up for.
