About this deal

He’s certainly not above sexualising women, and sometimes making them damsels to be rescued by Bond. Within Mr Big's organisation, Panek identifies Mr Big's henchmen as "merely incompetent gunsels" whom Bond can eliminate with relative ease.

Fleming was very successful in developing the James Bond character throughout the series, and he does so here in a manner that tells us that yes, this is the same character as before, but now we’re going to see more of his layers, making him more three-dimensional. Although no film deal was forthcoming, the pair became friends and a character in the third book 'Moonraker' (Drax's card-playing partner Max Meyer), was named in his honour. The story centres on Bond's pursuit of "Mr Big", a criminal who has links to the American criminal network, the world of voodoo and SMERSH—an arm of the Soviet secret service—all of which are threats to the First World.Station C has become suspicious of the Secatur, a diesel yacht that has been making frequent trips between Jamaica and Florida. His talent for writing fast and engaging prose, along with his knowledge of espionage and his fertile imagination led to the creation of James Bond, arguably one of the most-famous fictional characters of all time. Benson considers evil as the main theme of the book, and highlights the discussion Bond has with René Mathis of the French Deuxième Bureau in Casino Royale, in which the Frenchman predicts Bond will seek out and kill the evil men of the world. Fleming’s ability to capture the violence of the moment is uncanny, and you can really feel every thud and crack as Tee-Hee falls to the floor below. Savoye finds differences in the structure of the endings, with Live and Let Die 's promise of future sexual encounters between Bond and Solitaire to be more credible than Casino Royale 's ending, in which Bond vows to battle a super-criminal organisation.

Originally I was hoping to read one Bond novel each month, but as it is now the end of June, that’s obviously quite gone to plan! More than that, after tracking him through the jazz joints of Harlem, to the everglades and on to the Caribbean, 007 has realized that Big is one of the most dangerous men that he has ever faced. The adaptation was written by Henry Gammidge and illustrated by John McLusky, whose drawings of Bond had a resemblance to Sean Connery, the actor who portrayed Bond in Dr. Bond arrives at headquarters in his 1933 Bentley convertible, which has obviously been fixed since the events of the previous book.

It is brutal in places, a rollicking good adventure showing just why Bond would grow to be so much bigger than the written page. Personally, I wouldn’t trust an American who says “chap” to teach me proper slang, but to each his own I guess.

The first state of the dustwrapper is identifiable by the lack of the two line credit on the front flap "Jacket devised by the author and executed by Kenneth Lewis". Fleming first met him in August 1954 and presented an inscribed American first edition of Casino Royale (this copy previously sold through our offices). These gold coins have been turning up in the Harlem section of New York City and in Florida and are suspected of being part of a treasure that was buried in Jamaica by the pirate Henry Morgan.Fleming would go on to create some truly awesome villains, but he’s still working out the kinks here.
