About this deal

Sojiro Sakuma, an entrepreneur hailing from Chiba Prefecture, wanted to create a Japanese version of the popular fruit candies imported from abroad, thus founding Sakuma Seika. Both Seita and Setsuko are now at peace and no longer need to suffer from the harsh world they were living in. Whenever the word 'candy' is mentioned, it can evoke a variety of different feelings, from the joy that the treat often brings to happy memories from childhood. Following the premiere of Grave of the Fireflies, the company has taken to printing commemorative tins with Setsuko on them.

But as delicious as things such as Laputa egg toast and Ponyo ham ramen might look, there’s arguably no Ghibli food with more thematic and plot significance than Grave of the Fireflies’ candy drops. Sakumashiki Drops rose in popularity after the release of Grave of the Fireflies, written and directed by Isao Takahata and based on a semi-autobiographical short story by Akiyuki Nosaka.

TOKYO – A Tokyo sweet manufacturer famous for its Sakuma-shiki Drops canned candy will cease operations on Jan.

As much as the Sakuma Drops are a symbol of hope for the film’s protagonists, they're also one of hopelessness.Whether Setsuko has a tantrum or is well-behaved, she is rewarded by Seita with one of the candies from her tin. For now, though, fans of classic anime and/or classic candy might want to pick up a tin while they’re still available. While the candy’s eight flavors (grape, apple, lemon, strawberry, pineapple, Japanese peppermint, chocolate and orange) have largely remained the same over the last 100 years, its packaging has been altered frequently, making the now-iconic tins a highly collectible item. Sakuma’s Drops candy has been immortalized in the Grave of the Fireflies movie, as it was one of the few prized possessions owned by the Yokokawa siblings. In the film, the younger sister Setsuko Yokokawa can be seen frequently eating Sakuma’s Drops and offering her brother Seita Yokokawa some.

The Sakuma Seika brand is particularly well known abroad for this box of fruit candies (apple, orange, grape, strawberry, lemon, pineapple), reminiscent of the movie Grave of the Fireflies.Sakuma Confectionery, a separate company that makes a similarly-branded product packaged in green tin cans, remains in business. The container comes as shown, and is really cute, but so sad seeing Setsuko :( Anyways, it's great, and I would recommend it! Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. Sakuma’s Drops, the candy that appeared in Studio Ghibli’s Grave of the Fireflies, will be discontinued as its manufacturer Sakumaseika announced that the company is going out of business. During World War II, all three of the company’s factories, located in Tokyo, Osaka, and Manchuria, were destroyed, and the company was officially restarted in 1948.
