About this deal

To top it off, three weeks ago, he and his team climbed K2 in winter, which had never been done before. Beyond Possible: One Soldier, Fourteen Peaks - My Life in the Death Zone is a non-fiction book by Nirmal Purja.

Indrani Dutta reviews Beyond Possible: One Soldier, Fourteen Peaks - My Life in the Death Zone, by Nimsdai Purja". It was hard to put it down while reading about such a mammoth effort conducted by Nims and his entire team of Sherpas. Finde es ausgesprochen spannend, WARUM Menschen sich solchen Risiken aussetzen und warum sie ihre Grenzen austesten wollen. The Netflix Documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible , explores Nepal’s deep connection to high-altitude mountaineering through the eyes of Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja, a fearless, fun-loving Nepali climber on a quest he dubs “Project Possible”-to summit all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter mountains in just seven months. This was a record at the time of climbing, although it was broken in 2023 by Kristin Harila and Tenjen Sherpa, who summitted all 14 eight-thousanders in 92 days.

Mittlerweile hat er noch einige andere 8000er-Vorhaben umgesetzt (erfolgreiche Winterbesteigung des K2), die immer für unmöglich gehalten wurden.

I was rarely phased by the lung-burning temperatures or brutal winds and fatigue seemed to pass me by. He was also the first to reach the summits of Mount Everest, Lhotse and Makalu in a time period of 48 hours.Natürlich steht er als Initiator dieser "14/7"-Challenge im Zentrum, aber er betont immer wieder, dass ohne sein Team absolut nichts funktioniert hätte. He lead a team of fellow Gurkhas, rescued climbers off peaks, highlighted the ill effects of crowding at Everest, the litter left behind by expeditions, all the while calmly ignoring personal problems which he had aplenty - poor response, no funding to start with, permissions and above all, his mother's failing health. Go above and beyond what you thought was possible with one of the most ground-breaking mountaineers of our generation, providing exclusive 1:1 guiding and commercial opportunities for breath-taking high-altitude special projects. There’s no doubt that Nimsdai’s feat is extraordinary but the book is told in a very self indulgent and pretentious way. All the same, this true life story is very inspiring for those of us who have set limits to our capabilities.

Es liest sich einfach wie ein gemütlicher Nachtrag dieses wahnwitzigen Vorhabens, ein Resümee von einem, der eigentlich sogar NOCH mehr schaffen möchte. That’s where my next project came in, something nobody thought was possible - to climb all fourteen “death zone” mountains in seven months. Along the way he saved the lives of several stricken climbers, captured that now-famous image of the snaking queue to Everest’s summit and put the spotlight on climate change and the Nepalese climbing community. Oh, and he breaks several world records while training for and accomplishing Bremont Project Possible (as part of the challenge, he takes his sponsor’s watch faces to each peak, then they can be sold as such).

Yes, people often are held back by making up excuses, but thinking that if you did it once that you will never be successful at your goal is not true. From the descriptions containing a lot of military terms, to the repetitions and the "alpha male"-style of writing, this book read as if it were written by the mountaineering version of Kim Kardashian. Wanting to do what everyone thought impossible, Nims developed Project Possible, a mission to climb the fourteen highest mountains in the world in only seven months, which is seven years faster than the world record. Future adventurers who have read Olson's nonfiction title Into the Clouds: The Race to Climb the World's Most Dangerous Mountain or the fictional Peak (Smith) or Everest (Korman) series, Beyond Possible offers a fascinating look at what it takes to climb these imposing peaks right now.
