About this deal

Where Empires of the North differs from the base game is in only one major area: the Expedition board. Convert Workers to other Goods: This action allows a player to trade in 2 of his workers for any 1 resource of his choice, or 1 card (either Common or Faction). Place a Defense token: this is a free action and does not count towards a player’s ‘one action per turn’ limit. Players will each get a Faction board used as a “base” for their empire and the played cards will be placed alongside it.

The first 5 minutes the rules made my eyes cross a little - but the rulebook is actually written very well with good illustrations and the first game went smoothly and was fun.

The cards in the game are very nicely illustrated, and special abilities on the cards are very clear and easy to understand. Player turns are quick and snappy, you have just enough time between your turns to work out what the next step in your Grand Plan is, as this game rings with options. At the end of the game you count up your victory points plus extra points depending on the number of buildings you have to find the winner. If a player goes before you, they are going to raze your “spend three different resources for three points” Building each round.

Each faction has its own unique flavor and each plays differently from the other ones, so choosing a faction in this game actually makes a difference.Or should you use it as a deal or raze it, which gives various goods both now and later, but at the expense of having to give up the Location use of the card? The first time I played as Romans and I had a special card that let me send a couple of men to remove an opponent's building, but the next few games I never came across the same style card and the game had completely different play. Empires of the North feels more like the next evolution of the game engine, being more streamlined and improving on some ideas from the original.

Already, mere seconds into the game, let alone the round and you are making decisions which will significantly impact your engine. At this point, each player’s faction locations will be worth 2 victory points apiece and their common locations will be worth 1 each.

The Dice Tower has released their list of nominees for the 2014 Dice Tower Awards and to our surprise, Imperial Settlers has been nominated in 3 categories! Our defence token can be spent on a card to increase the raze cost by one, but if someone decides one of our buildings should go, there’s nothing we can do to stop it. This wheel, which gives two free uses per round and two more by spending apples, allows players to fill holes in their empire.Action Phase: beginning with the start player, each player will take turns performing a single action at which point it becomes the next person’s turn.
