Description

Performs best in full sun or light shade, in moist and well-drained soils. The soil has to be kept moist during the growing season.

Whether grown in the garden or containers, the first step of proper freesia care is to provide it with moist, but well-draining soil. In soggy soil, the delicate corms of freesia plants will rot. Plant freesia in a slightly sandy soil that has been amended with moisture retaining organic material. They prefer a location in full sun but can tolerate light shade. Throw in any flower food your bouquet came with, this should feature all the nutrients your blooms need to stay healthy.

Advice on buying freesias

Wedding flowers - Freesias are a favourite for weddings, especially in pastel shades of white and yellow. Their dainty flowers look great on corsages or nestled in amongst green foliage in a bridal bouquet. Transfer pots to a cool greenhouse or conservatory and provide a temperature of 10-15°C (50-60°F) through winter FIRST4: Entitles users to a 50% discount on the following – Your first 4 weekly deliveries, your first 2 fortnightly deliveries or the first of your monthly deliveries.

Water the corms sparingly before sprouting, then water frequently so the soil is consistently moist but not soggy. Too much water will lead to root rot. Freesias normally produce flowers 10 to 12 weeks after planting. Once they begin to bloom, they'll stay in flower for six weeks or longer. As with orchids, the blooms open sequentially along the stem, rewarding you with new flowers even as older flowers fade. Height: Freesia corymbosa (Burm.f.) N.E.Br. (syn. F.armstrongii W.Watson, F.brevis N.E.Br.) - the Cape Provinces

How to Care for Freesias in Gardens

Another option is to plant them in containers so you can bring the entire pot indoors for winter storage. How to Grow Freesias Indoors After bloom, reduce watering and allow the foliage to yellow and wilt. If you live in a cool area (hardiness zones 3-8) and want to save your bulbs, you may lift and store your corms in a cool dry location (55°F or 12°C) until next spring.
