If you have a Scan N Cut, scan your mat once you have everything set up and ready to be foiled and check that you have your design over the foil. If your machine has a USB power source, you can also use that, though machine manufacturers do not recommend it. You can definitely use the Foil Quill with your existing machine, but you will need to plug the USB adapter into your laptop or an external battery charger to power it – anything that is a power source with a USB charger in it will do. I was determined to use it, so I put it in the carrier w/o the adapter sleeve and left a small gap between the top of the carriage and the lower edge of the quill pen ( I eye it up to be about 1/8″or one width of the screw thread that is molded into the unit to screw the adapter on). BEFORE you remove your mat after the design has been completed, remove the foil and double-check that all of your design has been foiled.You CAN use it on leather, but I’m not sure about the “wearability” of it yet — since I’ve only had it a short time. I have wanted one for ages and finally managed to find it on sale and actually have the money for it.

These are the adapters that come in the pack so that you can use the Foil Quill in a number of cutting machines. If you flip the foil around so that the second pass is using an unused section of foil it may produce better coverage. The foil quill is a small, heating, pen-like device that you can place into your cutting machine, the same as you would a drawing tool, and tell your machine to draw.

The Foil Quill uses the heated tip to draw over a sheet of foil and transfer that foil to your project. As I mentioned earlier, the foil is very lightweight and you need to tape it to your project before you send it through your machine. I have been very impressed with the Brother Foiling Kit too and it comes with some designs that turn out really nice. The foil quill sounds awesome, but I do have a few questions, can I use it on leather, if it is used on wearable leather, does it wear well. If you need to shift the foil (or design) remember to remove the heat protector if you need to scan again.
